Monitoring of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Update as of April 1, 2018.

The end of the 2017–2018 heating season marks the end of monitoring CO poisoning incidents at a specific epidemiological monitoring center. However, CO poisoning can occur throughout the year, justifying ongoing surveillance. We therefore reiterate the need to continue reporting any suspected or confirmed cases of CO poisoning without delay. During the 2017-2018 heating season (October 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018), 107 episodes of carbon monoxide poisoning were reported in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. During these 107 incidents, 489 people were exposed and 252 were transported to hospital emergency rooms. Two deaths were recorded. This number of incidents is higher than in the two previous heating seasons (89 incidents in 2016/2017 and 98 in 2015/2016).With 80% of incidents, the distribution of incidents by location (home, public building, workplace, other) continues to show a strong predominance of accidental domestic incidents (Table 1).The Rhône (16 incidents), the Loire (15 incidents), and the Ain (14 incidents) are the departments that reported the highest number of incidents (Map 1). It should be noted, however, that the completeness of reports may vary by department and over time. For example, following the observation of a low incidence rate in the Loire in recent years, a specific awareness campaign to better engage certain reporters was conducted before the heating season and likely explains the significant increase in the number of incidents in this department compared to the two previous seasons (Table 2).The majority of incidents in single-family homes were linked to boiler malfunctions, demonstrating the importance of regular maintenance of these units.
