Alcohol in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Overview of consumption in 2021 and emergency room visits in 2023.
Key Points
Daily Alcohol Consumption
In 2021, 8.0% of adults aged 18–75 reported drinking alcohol daily; this percentage is identical to the national average. Men and those over 60 have higher rates of daily consumption.
Since 2017, the proportion of daily alcohol consumers has decreased significantly in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. This decline is particularly pronounced among men, those over 60, and people with no high school diploma or a diploma below the high school level.
Heavy occasional drinking
In 2021, 17.3% of adults aged 18–75 reported having monthly heavy drinking episodes; this proportion is in line with the national average (16.5%).
In the region, the proportion of monthly heavy drinking episodes has not changed significantly since 2017.
Exceeding low-risk drinking guidelines
In 2021, 24.0% of adults aged 18 to 75 reported exceeding the safe drinking guidelines; this proportion is significantly higher than the national average (22.0%).
This proportion is higher among men, those under 30, people with the highest income levels, and those with a degree beyond high school.
Emergency room visits directly related to alcohol
In 2023, 20,000 people visited the emergency room for reasons directly related to alcohol. With the exception of 2020—an atypical year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw a lower number of visits—the trend since 2017 has been generally stable.
The proportion of visits directly related to alcohol is decreasing, a trend largely explained by the increase in all-cause emergency room visits observed since 2021.
The departments of the former Auvergne region have the highest rates of emergency room visits directly related to alcohol, among both men and women.
