Suicide and Suicide Attempts in the Rhône-Alpes Region
The Rhône-Alpes Regional Suicide Observatory was established in 2014 to improve understanding of suicide and suicide attempts (SA) in the region. The data presented concern suicide mortality, based on databases from the Center for Epidemiology on Medical Causes of Death (Inserm CépiDc), and hospital stays for suicide attempts recorded in the Medical Information Systems Program for Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics (PMSI-MCO). Approximately 800 suicide deaths per year were recorded in Rhône-Alpes during the 2010–2012 period. The annual standardized suicide mortality rate was 12.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. Suicides were most common among those aged 45–54 and occurred more frequently among men than women. The departments of Ardèche, Drôme, and Loire recorded the highest rates. In 2014, the standardized rate of hospital stays for suicide attempts in Rhône-Alpes stood at 122 per 100,000 inhabitants. This rate was higher among women than among men. It was also higher in the departments of Ardèche and Loire than in the region’s other departments. The highest crude rates were recorded among girls aged 15–19 and women aged 45–49. This first regional assessment of suicide-related mortality and morbidity shows a more favorable situation in Rhône-Alpes than in France as a whole. This study also highlights significant inequalities by age and sex, as well as major regional disparities within the Rhône-Alpes region. To monitor the evolution of these disparities and measure the impact of regional suicide prevention policies, these data will be updated annually and systematically compared with national data. Data from the OSCOUR® network will further enrich these findings.
