Survey on Health and Eating Habits in Martinique (ESCAL 2003–2004). Results of the "Food Consumption and Nutritional Intake" section
The Study on Health and Dietary Intake in Martinique (Escal) was conducted in 2003–2004 by Cire Antilles-Guyane and the Martinique Health Observatory with the aim of assessing, among other things, the nutritional status of the population and its dietary intake. This report describes the dietary intakes of the Martinique population aged 16 and older in relation to the consumption benchmarks and target indicators of the National Nutrition and Health Program (PNNS). Dietary intake data were collected via two 24-hour recalls administered one month apart among individuals aged 16 and older, following a random selection of households to be included. Underreporters were assessed using the Goldberg method. The results are adjusted for the age and sex of the Martinique population and account for the sampling design and clustering effects. The association between sociodemographic characteristics and low consumption of fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and fish was analyzed using logistic regression. Overall, estimated energy intakes are fairly low, and macronutrient intakes are in line with PNNS recommendations. Low consumers of dairy products (<2.5 servings per day) account for eight out of ten individuals. Low consumers of fruits and vegetables (<3.5 servings per day) make up nearly 60% of the population. Different consumption patterns emerge by age, with the most unfavorable consumption levels generally observed among young adults. Age was indeed associated with low consumption of fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and seafood. Furthermore, a high socioeconomic score was associated with adequate fruit consumption, while a high level of education was associated with a higher probability of being a low consumer of dairy products. Taken together, these results underscore the importance of implementing measures to improve dietary intake in Martinique, particularly among young adults, in order to align with the recommendations issued under the PNNS.
