Public Health Bulletin on Tobacco in Guadeloupe. February 2021.
Key Points
With 380 people registered, the Guadeloupe region accounted for 14.1% of registrants in Overseas France (0.2% of all of France). This number represents 1.1% of daily smokers registered in 2018.
The number of smoking cessation kits ordered rose from 410 in 2017 to 3,660 in 2018 (+730%). The majority (60%) of the island’s 195 pharmacies were covered by the 2018 Smoke-Free Month campaign.
In 2015, the total number of deaths attributable to smoking was estimated at 109 (95% CI: 102–115), representing 3.5% of all deaths recorded that same year in the region. This rate is nearly four times lower than that of France as a whole in the same year (13%).
The proportion of deaths attributable to smoking was 5.9% among men and 1.3% among women in Guadeloupe, compared to 19.3% and 6.9% in France as a whole. Smoking is responsible for a significant proportion of premature deaths (deaths occurring before the age of 65): 8% of deaths were attributed to smoking before this age, with this proportion being higher among men (9%) than among women (4%).
The most common causes of deaths attributable to smoking are cancers (56.2% of annual deaths attributable to tobacco), followed by cardiovascular diseases (24.6% of annual deaths). These are the primary causes identified for tobacco-related deaths among both men and women.
Chronic respiratory diseases (19%) and cancers (15%) are the causes for which the proportion of deaths attributable to smoking is highest among both men and women (5% and 3%, respectively).
