Key Findings
Daily alcohol consumption among adults aged 18–75 living in Martinique was lower than that of their counterparts in mainland France (7.0% vs. 10.0%), but the prevalence of heavy episodic drinking per month was similar (14.7% vs. 16.2%) between the two regions.
Weekly consumption of beer (23.1% vs. 17.2%), spirits (16.0% vs. 9.7%), and other types of alcohol (9.1% vs. 4.3%) was higher among adults aged 18–75 living in Martinique than in mainland France.
Weekly alcohol consumption among young people aged 18–30 was higher in Martinique than in mainland France (47.7% vs. 32.5%).
More than 9 out of 10 17-year-olds (94%) reported having consumed alcohol at least once in their lives in Martinique, compared to just over 8 out of 10 (85.7%) in mainland France.
In Martinique, the cumulative mortality rate from the main diseases directly linked to alcohol (cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract, alcoholic cirrhosis, alcohol-induced psychosis, and alcoholism) was more than 20 times lower than the average in mainland France, for both men and women.
