Guadeloupe Public Health Bulletin. February 2019.
Key Points
According to data from the 2014 DOM Health Barometer, daily smoking among 18- to 75-year-olds was 12%, and daily or occasional smoking was 17%, with a higher prevalence among men. These data also show significantly lower daily or occasional smoking rates in Guadeloupe compared to the average in metropolitan France of 31.9%.
The estimated number of daily smokers in Guadeloupe is 40,000; the variables associated with smoking are gender and age, but neither income nor educational attainment are associated with smoking status.
Overall, while tobacco use is lower among women than among men, in terms of the amount of tobacco smoked, there is no difference between them.
According to the Escapad survey (OFDT), daily smoking among 17-year-olds was 11% in Guadeloupe versus 25% nationally.
The proportion of people who had ever tried e-cigarettes was 8% in 2014 (33% in mainland France), and 2% of people reported vaping daily.
In Guadeloupe, both women and men are significantly less likely to develop lung cancer than in mainland France, and they also die from it less frequently. Similarly, mortality from the main diseases associated with tobacco use (lung cancer, ischemic heart disease, and COPD) is significantly lower than in mainland France.
