Prevalence of high blood pressure in the general population of Martinique
Background - Since 1996, hypertension has been identified as one of the top health priorities in Martinique, but its prevalence in the general population had never been measured. Furthermore, obesity is on the rise in many countries, and it is recognized that obese individuals are more likely to have hypertension than those with a normal body mass index (BMI). The objective of this study is to measure the prevalence of HTN in the general population of Martinique and to examine the relationship between HTN, body weight status, and socioeconomic status. Methods - This is a general population survey using random sampling of geographic clusters, followed by households within each cluster, with all household members constituting the eligible population. Hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure greater than 140 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure greater than 90 mmHg and/or the use of antihypertensive medication. Body weight status is estimated by BMI. Results - The study included 1,504 individuals aged 16 years and older with a sex ratio of 0.7 and a mean age of 48.3 years for men and 48.5 years for women; p = 0.88. The prevalence of hypertension in the sample was 29% [95% CI: 25.9–31.8] and decreased to 22.5% [95% CI: 20.1–25.1] in adjusted data. The prevalence of overweight is 33.1% [95% CI: 30.2–36.6] and that of obesity is 20.1% [95% CI: 17.8–22.6]. Overweight is more common among hypertensive individuals than among those with normal blood pressure, 73.0% versus 47.4%; p < 0.001. Among hypertensive individuals, the prevalence of overweight does not differ significantly between men and women, but a higher prevalence of obesity is found among women (35.7% versus 20.6%; p < 0.05). Conclusion - This survey confirms the high prevalence of hypertension and obesity in the Martinique population. Preventive measures are necessary to reduce cardiovascular risk in this population.
