Bronchiolitis, COVID-19, and the Flu in the Caribbean. A Review of the 2025–2026 Season.

Key Points

Martinique

  • The 2025–2026 epidemic lasted 12 weeks (from S2025-48 to S2026-07), just like the previous season (2024–2025). However, it was shorter than previous epidemics (17 weeks on average in 2022–2023 and 2023–2024). Compared to the 2024–2025 season, with one exception, the indicators are lower in 2025–2026. In fact, 1,190 clinically suggestive cases were recorded compared to 1,300 the previous season, 176 emergency room visits compared to 303, and 66 hospitalizations compared to 102.
  • In hospitals, the proportion of emergency department visits for bronchiolitis was 19% in 2025–2026, compared to 30% in the previous season. However, the hospitalization rate was slightly higher during the 2025–2026 season (38%) than during the 2024–2025 season (34%).

Guadeloupe

  • The 2025–2026 bronchiolitis epidemic among children lasted 8 weeks. Surveillance is based on community and hospital data collected among children under 1 year of age. This outbreak was shorter than that of the previous 2024–2025 season, which lasted 11 weeks.
  • The observed indicators are approximately half those of the 2024–2025 season, with 380 clinically suggestive cases reported compared to 850 the previous season, 156 emergency department visits compared to 338, and 54 hospitalizations compared to 86.
  • In Guadeloupe and Martinique, for the 2025–2026 season, the decline in epidemic intensity may be linked, at least in part, to immunization campaigns for newborns against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections. This immunization is implemented either through maternal vaccination during pregnancy or through the administration of a monoclonal antibody to the infant.

Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy

  • There was no bronchiolitis epidemic during the 2025–2026 season. Since late October 2025, approximately ten clinically suggestive cases have been reported per week, but this has had no impact on hospital indicators (few emergency room visits and hospitalizations). No bronchiolitis outbreak has occurred in these territories since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
