Leading Causes of Death in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region. 2023 Report.

  • 53,713 deaths were recorded among residents of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, representing a standardized rate of 756 per 100,000 inhabitants, lower than the national level (798 per 100,000 inhabitants);
  • A decline in the mortality rate was recorded compared to 2022, as was the case nationally;
  • The two leading causes of death were neoplasms and diseases of the circulatory system, as at the national level;
  • Male mortality was higher than female mortality (standardized mortality rate of 967 deaths per 100,000 men vs. 596 deaths per 100,000 women).
  • The difference between men and women was particularly marked for neoplasms, diseases of the circulatory system, and external causes of morbidity and mortality;
  • Premature mortality (before age 65) was primarily due to neoplasms (rate of 61 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants), followed by external causes of morbidity and mortality (rate of 29.2 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants);
  • The five leading causes of mortality were the same for all departments in the region.
