Malaria in Mayotte. 2025 Report and Situation from January 1 to April 15, 2026.
Key Points
- Resurgence of locally acquired malaria cases in 2025, following an absence since July 2020: five cases were recorded in June and July 2025 in Mayotte;
- From January 1 to December 31, 2025, 106 imported malaria cases were recorded in Mayotte, 95.5% of which originated from the Union of the Comoros, bringing the total number of cases recorded in the territory to 111;
- Forty-two (42) cases required hospitalization in 2025 (38%), including eight admissions to intensive care. No deaths were recorded;
- Since the beginning of 2026 (data as of April 15), 86 cases of malaria have been recorded, including 81 cases imported from the Union of the Comoros and five cases suspected to have been acquired locally, currently under investigation; 25 cases required hospitalization;
- Plasmodium falciparum is the predominant species, accounting for 98% of cases reported in 2025 and 100% of cases reported in Mayotte in 2026;
- Mayotte has been in the malaria elimination phase since 2014. However, the continued increase in imported cases in recent years underscores the importance of maintaining control measures to prevent a resurgence of transmission in the territory.
