Update on the ongoing vaccination campaign in Mayotte

Since May 22, 2018, the Indian Ocean Regional Health Agency (ARS) and Public Health France have been conducting a vaccination campaign in Mayotte, in collaboration with local municipalities, the Departmental Council (Maternal and Child Health Services), the Regional Hospital Center, and the Prefecture of Mayotte. As of June 10, 15,537 children had been seen at a vaccination center, and 8,548 of them had been vaccinated. The vaccination campaign is ongoing, and families will be welcomed at the centers until June 30, 2018.

Campaign Timeline

Since its launch on Petite-Terre, the campaign has expanded to Grande-Terre in the Greater Mamoudzou region as well as to the north and center of the island, with 17 centers now open. Currently, the campaign serves the population of the municipality of Koungou and the island’s central region, with 8 centers open. 14 new centers will be set up soon in the southern part of the island. By June 30, 2018, 39 temporary vaccination centers (2 health clinics, 6 PMI branches, 12 Youth and Culture Centers, 9 schools, and 10 public facilities under the jurisdiction of local municipalities) will have been established to facilitate access to vaccination for all families on the island.

Currently, Santé Publique France is deploying 46 reservists for this campaign. 8,548 children have received one or more vaccinations. A total of 15,910 vaccines have been administered (an average of 2 vaccines per child).

Family participation in the vaccination campaign is very high, as evidenced by the large turnout observed at each center from the very first days of operation. Local partners are deeply involved and committed to the campaign’s success:

  • the Mayotte Hospital Center and the Departmental Council (PMI) for the organization and logistics of the campaign;

  • the municipalities for ensuring the smooth running of the campaign (providing facilities, helping to inform residents, recruiting staff to operate the sites, etc.);

  • local community leaders and associations (UDAF, etc.) in relaying information to families.
