Marisol TOURAINE, Minister of Social Affairs and Health, launched "Moi(s) sans tabac" on November 1, the first large-scale public health challenge ever organized in France. Organized by Santé publique France in partnership with the French National Health Insurance, this unprecedented initiative to encourage and assist people in quitting smoking was a huge success, with nearly 180,000 people registered and strong participation from healthcare professionals and partners.
With nearly 180,000 participants and more than 620,000 smoking cessation kits distributed, the first edition of "Moi(s) sans tabac" was a resounding success. This participation is also the result of the commitment of all healthcare professionals, including the 17,000 pharmacies that took part in the campaign, as well as that of the 100 national partners and more than 3,000 regional partners, working throughout France to raise awareness, provide information, and support smokers who want to quit.
The number of visitors to the tabac-info-service.frwebsite quadrupled, with 1.3 million visits from mid-October to mid-November.
The Tabac Info Service received over 15,000 calls in October and November on its 39 89 hotline, representing a 35% increase compared to the same period in 2015. According to Tabac Info Service’s tobacco specialists, the collective effort was particularly well received.
More than 72,000 smokers signed up for the new Tabac Info Service coaching app.
Numerous events were organized in various locations throughout France: special consultations at the George Pompidou European Hospital, promotional activities organized by the City of Nantes in parks and gardens, and more.
Participants also took to social media to share their experiences of quitting smoking. The Facebook page saw up to 10,000 interactions per week and received 69,328 likes.
"Moi(s) sans tabac" addresses a major public health issue: the fight against smoking. This initiative is one of the measures of the National Tobacco Reduction Program and complements other strong measures taken by Marisol TOURAINE, such as the introduction of plain packaging and the increase in the price of rolling tobacco.
While the challenge ends today, healthcare professionals and Tabac Info Service are still here to help everyone stay smoke-free or to support smokers in their efforts to quit.
