The seasonal flu vaccination campaign will begin on October 6. It targets more than 12 million people for whom the flu poses a risk of complications, some of which can be serious: this includes people aged 65 and older, those with certain chronic conditions (such as diabetes, heart failure, or respiratory failure), pregnant women, and people with morbid obesity. This year, the vaccination process has been simplified for adults getting vaccinated for the first time. All individuals aged 18 and older for whom the flu vaccine is recommended can now pick up their vaccine at a pharmacy by simply presenting their health insurance coverage voucher. More than 6.5 million people will be affected by this new measure. For those under 18, a doctor’s prescription remains mandatory. They can then get vaccinated by the healthcare professional of their choice: a nurse, doctor, midwife, or a pharmacist participating in the pilot program being conducted in four regions: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Hauts-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and Occitanie.Invitation letters from the Health Insurance Fund, accompanied by a voucher for 100% coverage and a document on the "5 good reasons to get vaccinated against the flu," were sent to insured individuals during the month of September. This coverage, valid through January 31, 2019, also applies to the newly available quadrivalent vaccines. The Health Insurance Fund has also invited independent healthcare professionals to get vaccinated: general practitioners, nurses, midwives, pediatricians, pharmacists who own pharmacies, massage therapists and physical therapists, gynecologists, and dental surgeons. Their vaccine is covered at 100%. Since vaccination is also recommended for professionals in medical-social facilities who are in contact with people at risk of severe influenza, a letter encouraging flu vaccination was sent to the directors of nursing homes (Ehpad). It aims to support them in their efforts to raise awareness among employees and healthcare professionals working in their facilities, as well as among their residents. Finally, all healthcare facilities and medical-social institutions received a memo from the Ministry of Health reminding them of the importance of vaccinating their staff against seasonal influenza. The Mutualité sociale agricole (MSA), for its part, has invited nearly 1.4 million of its members to get vaccinated against the flu.The importance of vaccine protection will be highlighted in an information campaign launching on October 26. It will be preceded by a press conference to be held at the Ministry of Solidarity and Health on October 18.
