In light of the Europe-wide salmonella outbreak linked to the consumption of certain Kinder brand products, the Ferrero Group issued a recall of certain Kinder brand products on April 4.
Investigations are being conducted in parallel by Belgian health authorities, in coordination with their European counterparts, at the Arlon plant in Belgium, where these products are manufactured. Following these investigations and recent findings that the information provided by Ferrero is incomplete, Belgian authorities have today revoked the plant’s production authorization. All Kinder products from the Ferrero production site in Arlon are also being recalled today.
All affected products had already been subject to a recall in France since April 4 for certain expiration dates. Now, all Kinder-brand products from this factory are being recalled, regardless of their expiration date:
Kinder Surprise 20g (pack of one, three, four, and six) and 100g;
Kinder Schoko-Bons Milk 125g, 150g, 200g, 300g, 330g, 350g, 480g, and 500g, and Kinder Schoko-Bons White 200g and 300g;
Kinder Happy Moments 191g, 242g, 347g, and 400g;
Kinder Mini Eggs Hazelnut, Cocoa, Milk, and Kinder Mini Eggs Mix;
Kinder Mix: 193g bag, 150g basket, 133g plush toy, 198g bucket, 125g car.
Consumers in possession of these products are asked not to consume them and to discard them.
The list and details of the affected products are available at rappel.conso.gouv.fr. Other Kinder products are not affected by this recall.
With a photo of the packaging showing the product details (Best Before date, barcode number), consumers can call the phone number provided by the company to obtain a refund (0800 653 653) or contact the company at the following address: contact.fr@ferrero.com.
The DGCCRF is monitoring the ongoing investigations in regular contact with the AFSCA (Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain) and is ensuring the effectiveness of the withdrawal and recall measures implemented in France.
Foodborne illnesses caused by Salmonella result in gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and sometimes vomiting), often accompanied by fever within 48 hours of consuming contaminated food. The symptoms of salmonellosis are relatively mild, and in most cases, patients will recover without specific treatment within 7 days. In some cases, these symptoms may be more severe in young children, immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, and the elderly.
Individuals, particularly those at risk as listed above, who have consumed the products mentioned above and are experiencing these symptoms are advised to consult their primary care physician immediately and inform them of this consumption. If no symptoms are present, there is no cause for concern.
Furthermore, to limit person-to-person transmission (particularly in households with young children), it is recommended to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the restroom, after changing a child, and before cooking.
