Maggie De Block, Belgium’s Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health, announced the decision “to introduce Nutri-Score as a food labeling system in Belgium” in order to make it easier “to choose healthy foods.” The Ministry of Solidarity and Health and Santé publique France welcome Belgium’s decision to provide consumers with better information on the nutritional quality of foods. With this commitment from the Belgian federal government, the rollout of Nutri-Score continues.
Nutri-Score Preferred Over Other Nutrition Labels in Belgium
Maggie De Block, Belgian Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health, announced the decision to make Nutri-Score the recommended nutrition labeling system in Belgium. This government-backed rollout across Belgium once again highlights the superiority of Nutri-Score over other nutrition labeling systems:
Nutri-Score has been tested and approved in France based on scientific evidence. It has demonstrated its effectiveness in influencing consumer purchasing behavior compared to other labeling systems.
Concise and easy to understand, Nutri-Score allows every consumer to see the best information on a food’s nutritional quality at a glance.
As a genuine public health initiative, Nutri-Score is supported by the World Health Organization. In Belgium, it is supported by food experts, consumer associations, and major retailers.
Nutri-Score products are appearing on store shelves in Belgium
The retailer Delhaize, which operates 771 stores, is the first Belgian retailer to introduce Nutri-Score in Belgium. A range of labeled products is now available in its supermarkets, with the goal of covering all of its brands within two years. Similarly, the retailer Colruyt has announced the full rollout of Nutri-Score on its product packaging by mid-2020.
Delhaize and Colruyt in Belgium, along with more than 70 other companies, have committed to this transparency initiative. The adoption of Nutri-Score labeling is a voluntary initiative by these companies, which aim to better inform consumers about the nutritional quality of foods. Public authorities are therefore encouraging all companies to join this initiative, which benefits the health of the entire population.
