On Tuesday, November 1, 2022, Santé publique France and the Ministry of Health and Prevention, in partnership with the National Health Insurance, are launching the 7th edition of Tobacco-Free Month.
This campaign encourages smokers to commit together to quitting smoking for a month and had already attracted 100,873 registrants as of October 28, 2022. Support for smokers is essential when quitting, so a variety of tools are available, particularly on the dedicated website and the Tabac info service app.
This year, Santé publique France, in partnership with Radio France and France Télévisions, is thinking big to support smokers in their attempt to quit: numerous artists will come together for a brand-new entertainment show, “Respire, la soirée Mois sans tabac,” which will air on Friday, November 18, on France 3.
Respire: An Entertainment Show to Bring People Together for Tobacco-Free Month
For this 7th edition of Tobacco-Free Month, we wanted to create a unifying event centered on quitting smoking, particularly by engaging celebrities. Through this show, we aim to make the collective nature of Tobacco-Free Month more tangible and demonstrate support for smokers who are committed to quitting.
For the first time, Santé publique France, in partnership with Radio France and France Télévisions, is creating an entertainment program centered on music, humor, and solidarity. This new initiative aims to provide a new form of collective support to all smokers participating in the Tobacco-Free Month challenge, already well-known to the French public.
This unifying event, hosted by Eglantine Emeyé and recorded at Radio France’s Studio 104 at the Maison de la Radio et de la Musique, will bring together numerous well-known public figures committed to the fight against tobacco. Among the artists will be: Patrick Bruel, Garou, Tété, Camille Lellouche, Suzane, Gauvain Sers, Mickey 3D, Hyphen Hyphen, Mentissa, Louise Attaque, Ycare, and Malo, as well as Lola Dubini, Éric and Quentin, Marc-Antoine Le Bret, Kamel le Magicien, Gérémy Credeville, Gil Alma, and Virginie Hocq.
The show will air in the late evening on Friday, November 18, 2022, on France 3. The program will also be broadcast in advance of this airing on the France Télévisions group’s cultural channel, Culture Box, on Thursday, November 10, at 9:10 p.m., as well as regionally via the 44 local radio stations of the France Bleu network on Saturday, November 12, at 7:00 p.m.
The program will be evaluated to measure its impact on smokers’ efforts to quit.
A collective challenge that increases the chances of quitting smoking for good by five times!
After two years marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, this new edition of the Smoke-Free Month challenge puts the collective back at the heart of the initiative while offering information and advice so that everyone can choose their own strategy and take the first step toward quitting smoking.
Smoke-Free Month is indeed a challenge to be tackled collectively, thanks to the support of various stakeholders (healthcare professionals, partners, local businesses, loved ones, etc.) who support participants in staying committed to quitting smoking. On-the-ground initiatives are once again being rolled out to reach smokers where they are. In each region1, a “Month Without Tobacco” booth staffed by regional ambassadors and local partners will be set up for two days in shopping centers to provide useful information on quitting smoking.
Personalized support through a variety of tools
Everyone’s journey to quit smoking is unique. That’s why a wide range of diverse and complementary tools and resources are offered to provide personalized support tailored to each individual’s profile.
Among the tools available to support participants are:
Tabac info service, a major smoking cessation support program, which includes:
The website tabac-info-service.fr, which offers a wide range of support content and tools (connecting you with a tobacco specialist, testimonials, Q&As, etc.);
The 39 89 helpline, Tabac info service’s free telephone service that connects smokers with smoking cessation professionals—tobacco specialists—to receive personalized follow-up;
The Tabac info service e-coaching app, developed by the French National Health Insurance in partnership with Santé publique France and with the support of the Francophone Society of Tobacco Medicine, which has been updated and offers a comprehensive, personalized e-coaching program to maximize the chances of quitting smoking for good (tips, supportive videos, tracking the daily benefits of quitting, etc.).
Santé publique France invites participants to connect on social media. By following the Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages, smokers can find daily support within the community, as well as useful information and advice to help them navigate the withdrawal phase.
Finally, the “Month Without Tobacco” quit-smoking kit includes the 40-day program—comprising two phases: 10 days of preparation and 30 days of the challenge—a savings wheel, and this year, two informational flyers: one detailing the various tools available to help quit smoking and the other explaining how to seek support from a healthcare professional throughout the quitting process. This kit is available free of charge upon registration on the Mois sans tabac website or at the 18,000 pharmacies participating in the initiative.
1 With the exception of French Guiana and Normandy.
