Commentary. Health Risk Assessment. Schiphol Airport. Summary of Results Through 1999. Special Issue. Airport Areas

This article is a commentary on the following report: Franssen EAM, Lebret E, Staatsen BAM. Health Impact Assessment. Schiphol Airport. Overview of Results Until 1999. RIVM Report 441520012. A series of studies has been conducted or is currently underway as part of an assessment and monitoring program for Schiphol Airport, near Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The various studies highlight several consistent health effects related to airport noise pollution: annoyance, perceived health, and sleep disturbances. However, this report is inconclusive regarding the links between exposure to airport-related air pollutants and the health status of nearby residents; it is an exploratory phase that does not measure individual exposure to air pollution or adequately control for confounding factors. Further studies incorporating exposure data and more information on potential confounding factors are currently underway.
