Two methodological guides for the management of unexplained mass illness and for indoor air quality management: a necessary dual link between the sciences and between science and management

There has been a recent increase in unexplained cluster cases and efforts to monitor indoor air quality in schools. The associated health concerns require appropriate answers that traditional investigations cannot provide. The DGS and the InVS, in collaboration with numerous institutional and academic stakeholders, have developed two methodological guides for assessing and managing these situations, with the aim of ensuring consistency in the approaches outlined in these two publications. Both guides strongly emphasize the need for interdisciplinary work to, on the one hand, foster the exchange of scientific perspectives and, on the other hand, serve as a genuine interface with decision-making and the resulting action. Among the key elements of these documents, it is worth noting the contribution of the social sciences, the establishment of a coordination unit, the structuring of communication regardless of the stage of the situation, and the importance of the preparedness of local stakeholders, particularly through the appointment of an indoor air quality liaison.
