Prevalence of overweight and obesity and determinants of physical inactivity among children aged 7 to 9 in France in 2007

The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children rose until the early 2000s, which was a cause for concern given their impact on future morbidity and mortality. In France, one of the priority objectives of the National Nutrition and Health Program (PNNS), in place since 2001, was to "halt the rise in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children." Two studies conducted in 2000 and 2007 using an identical protocol assessed changes in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children aged 7 to 9 years during this period. Second- and third-grade classes were randomly selected from randomly chosen elementary schools. The students’ weight and height were measured by medical staff from the French Ministry of Education, and a self-administered questionnaire on lifestyle habits was completed by the parents. The International Obesity Task Force thresholds were used to determine overweight and obesity. In 2007, 18.4% of the 2,525 children included were overweight, of whom 3.8% were obese. A comparison of the two studies, limiting the 2007 data to the school districts already covered in 2000, showed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity had stabilized over this period among children in this age group. Furthermore, analyses of sedentary behavior based on the 2007 data showed that children of overweight or obese mothers spent more time watching television than others. Additionally, the sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics associated with time spent watching television differed according to the mothers’ weight status. (R.A.)
