Dietary intake and the role of food aid among participants in the Abena study, 2004–2005.
Food aid organizations strive to distribute food in accordance with recommendations, notably by providing training to their volunteer and paid staff on how to put together nutritionally balanced food packages or meals. However, they often face significant supply constraints. They are, in fact, dependent on government aid, donations from private entities, or the general public, and are often forced, with limited resources, to supplement these with direct purchases. The relative role of food aid in the overall diet of those served and the individual food procurement strategies outside of this aid are poorly understood. Yet this information is essential for optimizing the types of food distributed. It is also very useful to identify the priority food and nutritional needs of populations in situations of extreme vulnerability. Indeed, while recommendations are the same for the general population, the poorest groups face supply constraints such that their dietary patterns may deviate from these recommendations in ways that differ somewhat from what is observed in the general population. Describing the dietary consumption of people relying on food aid thus helps to inform the implementation of interventions based on a refined understanding of the food situation of those affected. Based on data collected as part of the Study on the Diet and Nutritional Status of Food Aid Recipients (Abena Study), the objective of the initial analyses presented here is to describe the dietary intake of the individuals included in this study, as well as their food supply constraints and strategies.
