Occupational health indicators. Musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs in France

The government sought to establish, at the national level, a set of indicators designed to track changes in the health of the French population. Since its creation in 1998, the Department of Occupational Health (DST) of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) has focused on developing surveillance programs to regularly produce such data and thereby contribute to improving understanding of occupational risks. Data sources have expanded over time, and in 2009 the DST established a program for the regular production of indicators designed to provide a national overview of health issues related to the work environment, as well as their trends over time. These indicators are derived from various sources and will be published regularly on the InVS website: www.invs.sante.fr. This third issue focuses on musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) of the upper extremities. In this document, readers will find data on their frequency in terms of prevalence and incidence, as well as on the frequency of exposure to the main known risk factors, by sex, age, occupational categories, and major sectors of activity. Readers will also find information on the proportion of upper limb MSDs attributable to work, by occupational category and major economic sector, and on the extent of underreporting in the tables of compensable occupational diseases. Finally, a number of questions help put the presented results into perspective.
