Occupational Diseases Among Employees in the Food Retail Sector in France. Results from 2009 to 2016

Introduction and Objectives - Employees in the food retail sector are exposed to numerous physical and organizational stresses. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence rates of work-related illnesses in this sector, compare them with those in other sectors, and assess trends over time. Materials and Methods - The ODD program relies on a network of volunteer occupational physicians and their teams who report, twice a year over 15 consecutive days known as “fortnights,” all cases of ODD observed during consultations. In 2016, the program was implemented in 11 former French regions. Multivariate logistic regression models were performed to test the association between reporting MCP and working in this sector, as well as to estimate annual average trends. Results - Between 2009 and 2016, 3.5% of employees seen through the program worked in the GDA sector. They had a higher risk of being reported for a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) than those in other sectors (odds ratio OR of 1.4 [1.2–1.6] for men and 1.9 [1.7–2.1] for women). Female employees in large-scale retail were less frequently reported as suffering from mental distress compared to women working in other sectors (OR of 0.8 [0.7–0.9]). Trend analyses revealed mixed results, though they generally pointed toward a decrease in MSDs among women. Within the retail sector, among women, cashiers and self-service clerks were at the highest risk of MSD reports compared to "other occupations." Discussion and Conclusion - The downward trend in MSDs could be explained by changes in working conditions, particularly in connection with the implementation of numerous preventive measures. This trend could also be reinforced by a shift in reporting toward cases of psychological distress. Preventive measures remain essential in this sector.
