Program for the Surveillance of Occupational Diseases (MCP) in France. Results of the MCP Fortnightly Reports for 2006–2007–2008
Occupational diseases are reportable in France, but spontaneous reports are very rare. In 2002, the InVS and the Occupational Health Inspectorate established a surveillance program for occupational diseases, relying on a network of volunteer occupational physicians. Each physician in the network reports all cases of occupational diseases seen over a two-week period. This program, called "Quinzaines MCP," is repeated every six months. Sociodemographic data are collected to calculate the prevalence of various conditions by sex, age, socioeconomic status, and industry sector. In 2008, eight regions participated (Pays de la Loire, Poitou-Charentes, Midi-Pyrénées, and PACA since 2006; Alsace, Franche-Comté, and Aquitaine since 2007; and Centre since 2008). Physician participation and the reporting rate remained stable over the years (33%, or 964 occupational physicians, and 5.7% in 2008, respectively). With the exception of hearing disorders, prevalence rates are higher among women. They increase with age up to age 54, then decrease slightly among older individuals. In 2008, the main conditions were musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) (2.7% among men and 3.6% among women), followed by psychological distress (1.1% versus 2.4%). A downward gradient from blue-collar workers to managers is observed for MSDs, with industry and agriculture being the sectors most affected. A reverse gradient is observed for mental distress, with the finance sector being the most affected. This relatively new finding warrants further investigation. Organizational and relational factors are risk factors for many conditions. This program is part of the 2010–2014 Occupational Health Plan. In 2012, 15 regions are participating. (R.A.)
