Prevalence of Parkinson's disease in France in 2015 and projections through 2030

Objectives: In France, published prevalence rates for Parkinson’s disease (PD) most often pertain to a single geographic area or specific populations. The objective of this article is to estimate the prevalence of PD in France at the national, regional, and departmental levels for the general population. Methods: Using data on reimbursements for anti-Parkinson’s medications, a validated approach was used to identify individuals treated for PD between 2010 and 2015. The number of newly treated individuals in a given year was also estimated. Prevalence rates were described by age, sex, and department. Using a multi-state model, the number of people aged 45 and older who will be treated in 2030 was estimated. Results: At the end of 2015, 166,712 people were being treated for PD in France, representing a prevalence of 2.50 patients per 1,000 people. During that same year, 25,842 people were newly treated, representing an incidence of 0.39 patients per 1,000 person-years. Prevalence and incidence increased progressively with age up to age 80; more than half of the patients were over 75 years old. Men were affected approximately 1.5 times more often than women. The geographic distribution of the disease was characterized by a certain degree of spatial heterogeneity. By 2030, approximately 260,000 people are expected to be treated for PD in France. Conclusion: This study is the first on PD to cover the entire French territory and multiple health insurance schemes. These data contribute to a better understanding of the burden of PD at the national and subnational levels. Projections indicate an increasing burden of PD in the coming decades, due in particular to population aging.
