What is the purpose of sleep?
Research conducted over the past fifty years has confirmed the role of sleep as a restorative and regulatory process. During sleep, the immune system is strengthened, the skin regenerates, children grow through the secretion of hormones, and so on. Conversely, chronic sleep deprivation increases the risk of obesity and high blood pressure. Good sleep hygiene is a key factor in disease prevention. A review of the evidence.
