Management of Hypertension in France: Where Do We Stand?

Management of High Blood Pressure in France: Where Do We Stand? High blood pressure remains the most common chronic disease in France. Its management, which has been shown to be effective in preventing cardiovascular, renal, and cognitive complications, is therefore of major public health importance. Nevertheless, the results of the Esteban study conducted in 2015 show that the management of hypertension in France has not improved significantly since 2006, the date of the last study conducted on a representative sample of the French population. In 2015, one in three adults in France had hypertension. While screening rates remained high in France—with over 80% of adults reporting that their blood pressure had been measured within the past year—approximately one in two people with hypertension were unaware of their condition. Fewer than one in two people with hypertension were receiving pharmacological treatment, and only one in two treated adults had their blood pressure under control—representing less than 25% of all people with hypertension. The situation has deteriorated particularly among women, with a significant decline in the use of pharmacological treatments. Adherence to antihypertensive treatments was very low, with treatment covering only 64% of days in the year. In 2015, more than 40% of people with hypertension owned a home blood pressure monitor. In France in particular, patients’ awareness of their hypertension remains far below levels observed in other European countries. It now seems urgent to take effective action at this initial stage to significantly improve the management of hypertension in France. Finally, it appears necessary to quickly understand the reasons for the significant decline in the proportion of women receiving pharmacological treatment to avoid a potential loss of opportunity that could be detrimental to their health.
