Hospitalizations for follow-up care and rehabilitation in France following a stroke in 2007
Objectives - The objectives of this study were to estimate the proportion of patients admitted to acute care and rehabilitation (ACR) units following a stroke and to describe how this proportion varies according to patient characteristics, stroke characteristics, and acute-care settings. Methods - Patients were selected from the 2007 national short-stay PMSI database (PMSI MCO) based on a confirmed primary diagnosis of stroke, then linked to the 2007 follow-up care hospitalization databases (PMSI SSR) using an anonymization number. Results - Among patients hospitalized for a short stay due to stroke who were not deceased, 31% were identified in the PMSI SSR database: 7% in the functional rehabilitation (RF) sector and 24% in medical follow-up care (SSM). The overall proportion of patients hospitalized in SSR increased with age, whereas RF care was less common among older adults. Both of these proportions were higher in cases of initial hospitalization in a neurovascular unit or intensive care unit. Regional disparities were notable. Conclusion - Among patients hospitalized in 2007 for stroke who did not die, 31% received SSR care. Disparities existed based on age, sex, the acute-phase care pathway, and the patients’ region of residence. (R.A.)
