Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in France. Summary of reported cases from May 2021 to May 2023.

Key Points

  • 71 cases were reported between May 2021 and May 2023 (30 in 2021, 36 in 2022, and 5 in 2023).

  • 86% of the cases were “domestic” infections (61 cases), and 14% (10 cases) were infected in a “high-risk” country, either while traveling or because that was their usual place of residence.

  • Of the 71 reported cases:

    • 4 cases were children under 16 years of age and 15 were over 65 years of age;

    • 94% of cases were hospitalized;

    • no deaths had occurred at the time of reporting.

  • 15% of cases worked in professions that exposed them particularly to tick bites: livestock farmer or family member of a livestock farmer, or worker in horse or ruminant husbandry (n=7), National Forestry Office (ONF) agent (n=1), horticulturist (n=1), forester (n=1), agricultural high school student (n=1).

  • Haute-Savoie is the department that reported the most cases over these two years, even though the virus was identified there much more recently than in Alsace.

  • The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is now a major area of viral circulation, with mountain ranges particularly at risk, such as the Forez. The area of viral circulation extends south to the Ardèche, a department that should be subject to particular vigilance.
