Surveillance of Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika Virus in Metropolitan France, 2018
The Aedes albopictus mosquito, a vector for the chikungunya, dengue, and Zika viruses, has been established in mainland France since 2004. It poses a risk of local transmission of these arboviruses when individuals who are viremic—having been infected in areas where these viruses circulate—return to mainland France. In mainland France, epidemiological surveillance of chikungunya, dengue, and Zika is based on mandatory reporting (DO) of probable and confirmed cases. In metropolitan departments where the Aedes albopictus mosquito is established, from May 1 to November 30, surveillance through mandatory reporting is considered “enhanced,” with imported cases reported as soon as clinical suspicion arises to enable the implementation of mosquito control measures. In 2018, 16 cases of chikungunya, 333 cases of dengue, and 10 cases of Zika were reported. From May 1 to November 30, 7 imported cases of chikungunya, 197 imported and 8 locally acquired cases of dengue, and 1 imported case of Zika virus were confirmed. The spread of Aedes albopictus to nine new departments in 2019 raises questions about the sustainability of the current surveillance system. It could be refocused on confirmed or probable cases, in the absence of local transmission, to improve efficiency and resource utilization. With the constant increase in the global burden of arboviral diseases, it appears essential to inform travelers going to or returning from risk areas, as well as to raise awareness among healthcare professionals regarding their diagnosis and surveillance.
