Cases of Poona serotype salmonellosis in infants

Santé publique France is currently investigating cases of Salmonella Poona (S. Poona) salmonellosis in infants.

To date, the National Reference Center for Salmonella at the Pasteur Institute has identified four cases of Salmonella Poona (S. Poona) salmonellosis in infants whose strains belong to the same genomic cluster, meaning that the strains are genetically related.

These infants, aged 2 to 10 months at the time of symptom onset, fell ill between late August 2018 and late December 2018. Three infants were hospitalized for their salmonellosis; they have since been discharged.

Initial findings from interviews with the parents of these four infants indicate that, in the days leading up to the onset of symptoms, they consumed powdered milk of the same brand produced at the same factory in Spain. The four infants did not share any other food or drink in common.

Investigations are currently underway with the Spanish authorities and the manufacturer to determine the management measures to be implemented.
