Summary of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign conducted in 7th-grade classes during the 2023–2024 school year in France
Key Points
The number of children vaccinated against HPV in middle schools was estimated at 106,346 for the first phase of the campaign and at 85,470 for the second phase.
At the end of the first phase of the campaign, taking into account vaccinations administered in the city and at middle schools, HPV vaccination coverage for at least one dose was estimated at 41% among boys and 55% among girls born in 2011. This represents an increase of 15 percentage points among boys and 17 percentage points among girls compared to the measurement taken before the campaign began.
At the end of the second phase of the campaign, taking into account vaccinations administered in the community and at middle school, HPV vaccination coverage with at least one dose among boys born in 2011 was estimated at 48% and among girls at 62%. This represents an increase of 24 percentage points among girls and 22 percentage points among boys compared to the measurement taken before the campaign began. The vaccination coverage for two doses was estimated at 30% among boys and 38% among girls.
At the regional level, vaccination coverage was significantly lower in the overseas departments and regions (DROM) than in mainland France. In mainland France, it was lowest in Corsica and highest in Brittany.
The increase of more than 20 percentage points in vaccination coverage observed during the vaccination campaign demonstrates the effectiveness of implementing the campaign in schools to increase HPV vaccination coverage. This campaign has brought us closer to the vaccination coverage target of 60% set for 2023 and underscores the importance of continuing these school-based campaigns until the target of 80% is reached by 2030 as part of the 2021–2030 Decade-Long Strategy for Cancer Control.
