Interventions to increase vaccination coverage for the human papillomavirus vaccine
Introduction - Identifying and implementing interventions that have been shown to be effective in increasing vaccination coverage (VC) for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine are essential for preventing HPV-related diseases. The effectiveness of several of these interventions, in terms of increasing vaccination coverage and reducing vaccine hesitancy, has already been established in other countries. Objective - The objective of this article is to identify types of interventions that significantly increase HPV vaccination coverage or reduce vaccine hesitancy, which could be implemented in France. Method - This study consisted of conducting an "overview of reviews" to identify systematic reviews focusing on interventions aimed at increasing HPV vaccination coverage or reducing vaccine hesitancy. Results - 11 systematic reviews were included; they identified 39 types of interventions classified into four different categories of action: knowledge-based interventions, behavior-based interventions, environment-based interventions, and interventions combining at least two strategies from different categories. Discussion - The scientific quality and heterogeneous designs of the identified interventions prevent us from concluding that any particular type of intervention is more effective. However, multi-component approaches, combining different strategies and targeting young people, parents, and healthcare professionals, appear to yield the best results in terms of vaccination coverage.
