Surveillance of infections associated with invasive devices. SPIADI National Initiative. Results of the surveillance conducted in 2021
Santé publique France has published the results of the annual surveillance conducted by the National Mission for the Surveillance and Prevention of Infections Associated with Invasive Devices (SPIADI) between January 1 and August 15, 2021. The use of invasive devices in patient care can be associated with serious infections, particularly bacteremia and pneumonia. These infections are a major cause of mortality and morbidity. The goal of this surveillance, combined with assessment and training initiatives, is to reduce these infections. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the national surveillance program for infections associated with invasive devices involved one in four healthcare facilities. Healthcare facilities participate in the surveillance through two possible methods: - "UNIT-BASED" surveillance using the BactADI protocol for all departments other than intensive care, or the ExpADI protocol for intensive care units wishing to report incidence rates relative to exposure to invasive devices; - "PATIENT-BASED" prospective surveillance: using the REA InfADI protocol for adult and pediatric intensive care units, the NEO InfADI protocol for neonatal intensive care, or the DIA InfADI protocol for hemodialysis units. For each type of facility and each specialty, the characteristics and incidence rates of the monitored infections, as well as the characteristics of the monitored patients, were reported. The large number of participants, beds, and monitored hospital days, along with the 3-month follow-up of infection counts, enable the calculation of infection incidence rates for each type of facility and each sector.
