COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for January 13, 2022

Key Points

In Week 01, there was a sharp increase in SARS-CoV-2 transmission and a rise in new hospital admissions and critical care admissions, significantly increasing the strain on hospital capacity.

  • Mainland France:

    • Highest incidence rates among 20- to 29-year-olds (> 5,200 per 100,000 inhabitants) and 10- to 19-year-olds (> 4,500)

    • Incidence rates > 2,000 in all regions

    • Increase in new hospitalizations and admissions to critical care across most of the country

    • Less pronounced increase in hospitalizations during this wave, relative to the rise in incidence

    • Stable proportion of 0-17-year-olds among hospitalized COVID-19 patients

  • Overseas territories:

    • Incidence rate > 2,000 in all regions

    • Very high rates of new hospitalizations in French Guiana, Mayotte, and Réunion

Variants

  • 89% of screened tests showed a profile consistent with the Omicron variant in S01

  • Omicron accounted for 65% of interpretable sequences in the Flash S52 survey of December 27, 2021

Prevention

  • Vaccination as of January 11, 2022 (Covid Vaccine data):

    • 77.6% of the total population had received a full primary vaccination series

    • 55.7% of those aged 18 and older had received a booster dose (66.8% of eligible individuals) and 76.4% of those aged 65 and older (85.5% of eligible individuals)

  • Importance of combined measures:

    • Complete vaccination series with a booster shot as early as three months

    • Adherence to preventive measures, including mask-wearing and contact reduction, as well as other recommended measures such as frequent ventilation of enclosed spaces, teleworking, and participation in contact tracing
