Disability and Social Inequality in France, 1999.

Objectives - To describe the relationships between socio-occupational categories and disability across the three levels of Wood’s classification (impairments, limitations, and disadvantages). Method - The data used were from the 1999 HID national household survey conducted by INSEE. All age groups were included in the analysis, except for the section on employment access, which covered only the 20–59 age group. Results - Impairments are more frequent among individuals who report them as they move down the social ladder. These inequalities persist and intensify as one moves from impairments to disabilities and then to disadvantages. A continuum is observed across different socio-professional categories: these inequalities do not affect only a vulnerable segment of society. Discussion - The extent of the observed inequalities, which increase across the three levels studied, raises questions about the effectiveness of compensatory measures. (R.A.)
