HBV and HCV infections among migrants and vulnerable individuals treated at COMEDE between 2007 and 2016.

The Comede Health Center at Bicêtre Hospital provides medical consultations to migrants living in the Île-de-France region who have recently arrived in France and are particularly vulnerable. A comprehensive health screening is routinely offered, including testing for HBV and HCV infections, and is completed by 96% of patients. Results are continuously documented by healthcare providers in a database and in a paper medical record. The prevalence of chronic HBV and HCV infection among 16,095 individuals seen in general medical consultations at the health center between 2007 and 2016 was 6.8% for HBV and 1.8% for HCV. Only 8% of those infected with HBV and 15% of those infected with HCV were already aware of their serostatus. Among those seen in 2014, 6% were vaccinated against HBV and 45% required catch-up vaccination. A higher accumulation of vulnerabilities is found among HCV-infected individuals, who tend to be older. These results support a proposal for screening using the three HBV markers and HCV antibodies, supplemented if necessary by catch-up vaccination or referral for follow-up and treatment. More generally, the goal is to improve access to care and prevention among migrants with multiple risk factors.
