Living with hepatitis C: a study by Hépatites info service in 2011, France.
Introduction. In France, more than 220,000 people are living with chronic hepatitis C. Nevertheless, the general public remains largely unaware of the disease. Little data is available, both regarding those affected and the impact of the disease on their lives. Method. Hépatites Info Service (HIS) is a telephone helpline for questions about viral hepatitis. The survey consists of a questionnaire accessible on the HIS website or via a toll-free number. The sample consists of 165 participants. Results. Nearly all (96%) of the participants who were undergoing treatment at the time of the survey or had done so in the past reported particularly severe adverse effects: 26% had to discontinue treatment early, and 69.2% were on sick leave. Fatigue tops the long list of these symptoms, which have a significant impact on psychological well-being. Discussion-Conclusion. The characteristics of the participants are similar to the national hepatitis C surveillance data from the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance. This study highlights the wide variety of profiles among people with the disease and the challenges they face. Taking this diversity into account requires a comprehensive approach to care. (R.A.)
