Influenza Surveillance in France, 2021–2022 Season
This article provides a summary of epidemiological and virological data on influenza in France during the 2021–2022 season. Methodology - This summary is based on a descriptive analysis of surveillance data on influenza or influenza-like illness reported by community healthcare networks, virological analyses from partner laboratories, surveillance of emergency department visits and hospitalizations coded as influenza, surveillance of severe influenza cases hospitalized in intensive care units, reports of acute respiratory infection outbreaks in long-term care facilities, and mortality data from electronic death certificates. Results - Active circulation of influenza viruses was detected as early as December 2021 and remained at a low level for approximately two months, with significant regional variations. An epidemic resurgence was detected starting in March. The epidemic began in week 09 (early March), peaked nationally in early April, and ended in week 17 (late April), lasting nine weeks. No other influenza epidemic had peaked as late during the 2009–2022 period. Co-circulation of the A(H3N2) and A(H1N1)pdm09 (1) viruses was observed, with a variety of viral strains detected. Conclusion - The 2021-2022 influenza epidemic, which was exceptionally late, was characterized by atypical dynamics and the co-circulation of the A(H3N2) and A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses. Its impact was moderate in the general population but significant among children under 15 years of age. This epidemic circulation of influenza viruses occurred concurrently with a major wave of COVID-19. In this context, it is important to reiterate the importance of prevention, namely vaccination of at-risk individuals, supplemented by preventive measures, to limit the spread of the virus among contacts of confirmed cases.
