Epidemiological and virological surveillance of influenza in mainland France: 2006–2007 season.

This article presents an epidemiological and virological overview of influenza activity in mainland France during the 2006–2007 season. Method - The article is based on community-based influenza surveillance data provided by the Sentinelles network and the Grog network, virological analyses from the National Reference Centers for Influenza Viruses, partner laboratories of the Grog network, and the Renal network (national network of hospital laboratories), surveillance of emergency department visits and hospitalizations for clinical influenza (Oscour network), and surveillance data on mortality from clinical influenza (network of 22 DDASS). Results - The influenza epidemic began in mid-January 2007 and ended in early March 2007. The epidemic peak occurred in week 06/2007 (early February). The 2006–2007 season was characterized by a moderate-intensity epidemic without particular severity. Influenza A(H3N2) viruses related to the A/Wisconsin/67/2005 strain were overwhelmingly dominant throughout the season. This strain was included in the 2006–2007 influenza vaccine. No human cases of influenza A(H5N1) were diagnosed in France during this period.
