Trends in National Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Coverage Among High-Risk Individuals and Healthcare Professionals in France, 2007–2025
Introduction – Vaccination against seasonal influenza is recommended annually for people at risk of severe influenza or complications, as well as for healthcare professionals. The objective of this study is to describe trends in vaccination coverage (VC) among the various target populations, as well as the factors influencing these trends. Method – Influenza vaccination coverage was estimated for people aged 65 and older and at-risk individuals under 65 (data from the National Health Data System—SNDS—) from 2016 to 2025, and for residents and staff working in long-term care facilities for the elderly (Ehpad) (seven studies conducted between 2007–2008 and 2024–2025), healthcare professionals working in healthcare facilities (studies conducted in 2008–2009 and 2018–2019), as well as for pregnant women (studies in 2021). Results – Flu vaccination coverage in France is insufficient and marked by social and regional health inequalities. In 2024–2025, vaccination coverage rates were notably 53.7% for people aged 65 and older, 82.7% for residents in long-term care facilities (Ehpad), 25.3% for at-risk individuals under 65, and 24.2% for healthcare professionals working in long-term care facilities (34.2% for nurses and 19.3% for nursing assistants). Regardless of the populations studied, influenza vaccination coverage had generally been declining since the COVID-19 crisis. Conclusion—Influenza vaccination coverage is low and declining in France. It is necessary to strengthen efforts to support vaccination campaigns.
