PestiRiv: Study of Pesticide Exposure Among Residents of Wine-Growing and Non-Wine-Growing Areas. Volume 2: Results of Biological Bioaccumulation

Santé publique France and ANSES are conducting the PestiRiv study, which aims to describe environmental contamination and the exposure of people living in wine-growing areas (near vineyards) to pesticides used on these crops. The objectives of this study are to determine whether the measured levels are higher than those observed in people living in non-wine-growing areas (far from any crops), to identify the factors associated with pesticide levels, and to describe the variation in pesticide levels between periods when the vines are being treated and when they are not. This study is unprecedented in the number and diversity of samples collected together: ambient air, indoor air, dust settled on the ground, urine, hair, and garden fruits and vegetables. Volume 2 presents the results of exposure measurements conducted on urine samples (3,484 samples) and hair samples (1,890 samples) collected during the study period (between October 2021 and August 2022). In total, 13 biomarkers were analyzed in urine and 17 biomarkers in hair. The majority of biomarkers analyzed in urine were quantified in nearly all samples. Conversely, in hair, only ametoctradin was frequently quantified (exclusively in children). The exposure levels measured in people living in wine-growing regions are generally of the same order of magnitude as those observed in the general population in France or abroad. However, PestiRiv’s exposure results show that, for the majority of biomarkers measured, there is very likely or likely overexposure among people living in wine-growing regions compared to those living in non-wine-growing regions. The results also show that several factors related to agricultural practices, the dispersion of PPPs in ambient air, and domestic practices (housing characteristics, habits, and lifestyles) likely influence the exposure of residents living near vineyards. For the majority of the biomarkers measured, there is very likely or likely overexposure among residents living near vineyards during the vine treatment period, compared to the non-treatment period. The overall conclusion of PestiRiv must take into account all results regarding exposure and environmental contamination. This conclusion is presented in the summary accompanying the study report and in the joint opinion of Santé publique France and ANSES, which includes the conclusions and recommendations of their expert panels on the results of this study.
