Effective Interventions for Preventing Illicit Substance Use Among Youth: A Review of the Evidence - Key Findings
This document is a summary of the report *Validated Interventions for the Prevention of Illicit Substance Use Among Youth*, produced by INPES. The purpose of this summary is to provide public health officials and practitioners with an overview of interventions whose effectiveness has been validated through scientific protocols. To ensure comprehensiveness, effectiveness, and rigor, this review was conducted using a method developed at INPES in 2010 to analyze the scientific literature in order to identify and classify relevant interventions. Approximately twenty interventions are highlighted here as having an impact on the prevention of illicit substance use among young people. Half of these are aimed at the general population, while the others target vulnerable groups. A large majority of the programs focus on developing adolescents’ social skills, and parental skills training is also frequently emphasized. Most interventions combine several approaches: they may be implemented in school settings, involve the family and/or the community, etc. Knowledge of these intervention approaches, which are widely used internationally, should enrich the discussion regarding practices developed in France.
