Perceptions of hepatitis C treatment among people who use drugs. InVS-ANRS Coquelicot Survey, France, 2004–2007.
Background - In France, access to hepatitis C treatment has long been limited for people who use drugs (PWUD), but it has improved in recent years. Between 2004 and 2007, the Coquelicot survey examined perceptions of hepatitis C treatment among people who use drugs, combining quantitative data with a qualitative approach. Methods - The Coquelicot survey is a cross-sectional, multi-city epidemiological study (Lille, Strasbourg, Paris, Bordeaux, and Marseille) conducted among 1,462 drug users who had snorted or injected drugs at least once in their lives. A complementary socio-anthropological component was conducted among 99 users. Results - Ninety-two percent of drug users perceive hepatitis C as a serious disease, and 77% are aware of the existence of effective treatments. However, 55% believe that these treatments are easily accessible to drug users. Difficulties in accessing treatment are attributed to fears related to the treatment itself (54%), stereotypical personality traits attributed to drug users (45%), and fears related to preliminary tests (33%). The attitude of doctors, precarious living conditions, and a lack of information are cited by 20% of IDUs. Discussion-conclusion - The qualitative component of the survey illustrates the difficulties in doctor-patient interaction and the importance of the circulation of negative information about hepatitis C treatment within the IDU population. IDU’s would like to see the establishment of structures that facilitate the integrated management of hepatitis C, addiction, and treatment tailored to their needs. (R.A.)
