Influential Women Under the Influence? Gender, Social Class, and Psychoactive Substance Use.
The use of psychoactive substances is a predominantly male behavior, with the exception of the use of psychotropic medications. The differences between men and women are significant when it comes to regular alcohol and cannabis use, but are smaller for tobacco use. A secondary analysis of the Health Barometer—a representative survey of the general population conducted among 30,514 people in 2005—showed that gender-specific patterns must nevertheless be adjusted according to age, educational level, employment status, and socio-professional category. The significant social variability in the use of psychoactive substances makes gender an important factor in understanding these practices as well as in designing prevention and addiction management strategies.[article excerpt]
