Survival of People with Cancer in Metropolitan France, 1989–2018—Materials and Methods
This study focuses on the follow-up of individuals diagnosed with cancer between 1989 and 2015, who were 15 years of age or older at the time of diagnosis and residing in one of the metropolitan departments covered by a registry (19 to 22 departments, depending on the type of cancer studied). The vital status of the individuals included was updated as of June 30, 2018, by the registries using a standardized procedure. As in the previous study [1], the results are organized into three parts: Part 1: 1- and 5-year survival of individuals diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 (all registries); Part 2: Trends in net 1-, 5-, and 10-year survival for individuals diagnosed between 1990 and 2015 (restricted to registries covering the entire 1990–2015 period, men and women combined); Part 3: Long-term net survival (20 years) for individuals diagnosed between 1989 and 2000 and under the age of 75. Note that certain malignant hematologic diseases have only been analyzable since 1995 or 2003 (see Table 7 in Section 1.6): for these hematologic malignancies, the trends in Part 2 therefore cover the period 1995–2015 or 2003–2015, respectively, and Part 3 is not presented. Methodologically, this new edition uses an approach based on modeling excess mortality rates to estimate net survival. The models used are based on penalized multidimensional splines; these models were developed within the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Department of the HCL [4-5]. It should be noted that the study of national trends in incidence and mortality also used penalized multidimensional splines, but within the framework of Poisson models [6-7].
