The Health of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing People. Data from the 2011/2012 Health Barometer Survey for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing People.
The Health Barometer for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (BSSM) was conducted in 2011 by INPES in partnership with the National Solidarity Fund for Autonomy (CNSA). This study is an extension of the 2010 Health Barometer, which examines the health-related perceptions and behaviors of the population residing in metropolitan France. In addition to deafness, the BSSM takes into account hearing disorders such as tinnitus (ringing or buzzing) or hyperacusis (heightened sensitivity to sound, sometimes to the point of becoming painful). The topics investigated include, among others, tobacco and alcohol use, vaccination practices, sexual behavior, cancer screening, quality of life, and healthcare utilization. The survey was motivated by the fact that these populations are generally not included in telephone-based health surveys. The questionnaire was self-administered online in 2011 among nearly 3,000 people. The questions addressed include whether perceptions of being informed about various health topics, preferred sources of information, and requests for information vary depending on the means of communication (French, French Sign Language) and access to information (ability to read or not). This document presents some of the results of this survey.
