The prevalence of treated epilepsy, estimated using the National Health Data System (SNDS), stood at 10.2 per 1,000 inhabitants as of January 1, 2020, in France; it is similar to the prevalences observed in the United States and England. Prevalence, which is similar among men and women, increases with age, particularly in the second half of life, but earlier in men than in women, due to vascular causes. Prevalence increases steadily with greater socioeconomic disadvantage. There is regional heterogeneity in treated epilepsy, with higher prevalence in northern departments and those located along a northeast-southwest diagonal, as well as in certain overseas departments. Epilepsy appears to be a good marker of health inequalities in France, and its monitoring is feasible using the SNDS.
