Sumex 2. Creation of an employment-exposure matrix based on data from the 2003 Sumer survey
Sumex 2 is a tool for identifying current occupational exposures based on industry sector and/or occupation, using data from the 2003 Sumer survey. This survey collected information on occupational exposures from a sample of approximately 50,000 French employees. The data were used to construct an occupation-exposure matrix, using a segmentation method that identifies homogeneous groups in terms of exposure, defined by occupation (coded using the 2003 classification of occupations and socio-professional categories) and the sector of activity (coded using the 2003 French classification of economic activities). This report presents the method used and the main results. A matrix specific to each hazard was created for 71 chemical agents, 18 families of chemical hazards, 3 physical hazards (noise, cold, heat), and 13 organizational stressors (related to working hours, work pace, and contact with the public). For any combination of PCS and NAF codes, the proportion of workers exposed to each hazard or constraint is available, along with other indicators (duration, intensity) characterizing the exposure. Plans are in place to make Sumex 2 freely accessible on the Internet, to enable its use particularly by occupational physicians and occupational health and safety professionals. A software application for accessing the data is currently under development. (R.A.)
