Results of the Ongoing Survey on Accidents in Daily Life. 1999–2001. EPAC Network. Summary
Accidents in daily life are "unintentional injuries" that occur at home or in the immediate vicinity (garden, yard, garage, and other outbuildings), outdoors (in a store, on a sidewalk, near the home, etc.), at school, while playing sports, or during vacations or leisure activities. Accidents in daily life are very common. In France, they cause nearly 20,000 deaths each year—nearly three times more than traffic accidents and 20 times more than workplace accidents. While this number has been declining since the early 1980s, it is likely to rise in the coming years, given the projected increase in the proportion of older adults in the population. In addition to deaths, accidents in daily life result in several million visits to medical care each year in France. The aftereffects of the most serious accidents cause significant suffering, while also placing a heavy burden on society. Despite their significance, accidents in daily life are not always a top priority, whereas from a public health perspective, all accidents could and should be prevented through appropriate preventive measures based on sound epidemiological knowledge of their occurrence. The ongoing survey on accidents in daily life (EPAC) provides part of this epidemiological knowledge. The basis of this study is the recording of emergency department visits for accidents in daily life at certain hospitals, including data on the injured person, their care, the characteristics of the accident (mechanism, location, activity, type of injury, injured body part), and the products (agents, elements) involved in the accident. This report contains the detailed results of the EPAC survey for the three years 1999, 2000, and 2001, covering more than 140,000 accidents of daily life treated in the emergency departments of hospitals in Annecy, Besançon, Béthune, Bordeaux, Limoges, Reims, and Vannes.
